Adobe Photoshop CS5 and Below
THe AutoSave feature is not available in Adobe Photoshop CS6 and below, thus you willl have to rely on 3rd party software. Adobe Photoshop CS6 and Above
If your Photoshop CS6 crashes for some reason, then next time you will open your file that you failed to save in the end, then Photoshop will open the saved version and the recovered version right after next to your saved file. Go to ‘Edit’ –> ”Preference’ –> ‘File Handling’

The problem with this is that when one is working on large PSD files (over 100mb atleast) it takes atleast 4-5 seconds to save the file. It sounds less but it’s actually quite a lot since it you can’t do anything during that time and that 5 seconds can really distract your concentration!

Yeah, not so ideal for those working on a really huge file, then again, 5 seconds for a sip of coffee aint that bad.
Does Photoshop not have a built-in set up which takes care of automatic saves once tuned up to do just that? AutoCAD allows to have the drawing auto-saved every 1 minute at most frequent, so what would be the point to install a gadget to perform this?
No, Photoshop doesn’t have an autosave option…. not in CS3. Probably in CS4 and above.

Ctrl+S never been a problem for me. It can even help me relax or perceive more ideas by doing it many times as fast as I can hahaha
Take a look at PsdAutoSaver. It has options not only about when to save, but *if* a document should be saved, based on how large the file is. So, larger files can be saved less frequently, or not at all.

This feature is now available built into CS6. Kinda nostalgic looking back how far Photoshop has come!
